AUTISM ASSESSMENT BRISBANE

Guidance for Children 5+, Adolescents & Adults Seeking an ASD Assessment

Why Consider an ASD Assessment

Brisbane Centre for Psychology provides comprehensive ASD assessments designed to help children, adolescents and adults better understand themselves and their unique neurodiversity.

An Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) assessment explores how you process information, interact socially and experience the world. Everyone has their own strengths, patterns and ways of coping. A comprehensive autism assessment helps to map these out and provide clarity about challenges you may be experiencing.

An autism diagnosis isn’t aimed at identifying your difficulties, it’s about being able to recognise your abilities and individual traits. With this insight, you, your family members and support teams can work together to create strategies and environments that promote confidence, independence and wellbeing in daily life.

Areas Explored in an ASD Assessment

A thorough ASD assessment may examine several areas, including:

What to Expect During an Autism Assessment Brisbane

Our ASD assessments are conducted one-on-one with a psychologist and explore the key areas relevant to Autism Spectrum Disorder, including:

We also consider co-occurring conditions such as ADHD, anxiety or learning differences to ensure you receive a complete and accurate picture of your neurodevelopmental profile.

Your assessment begins with an intake session where we explore your background, developmental history, strengths, current concerns and any traits associated with Autism.
If it appears unlikely that an ASD diagnosis is the most appropriate fit, your psychologist will discuss this during the intake session. This allows you to make an informed decision about whether to proceed with the full assessment.

If continuing, your psychologist will conduct a structured assessment using:

These tools help us understand how your communication style, sensory profile, thinking patterns and behaviours appear across different settings.

You and, where helpful, someone who knows you well will complete standardised questionnaires to provide additional perspective across home, school, work or social settings.

Your psychologist will then score and interpret all assessment components and prepare a comprehensive written report, which includes:

Reports can also be customised to align with NDIS guidelines, supporting applications, funding justification or goal-setting processes.

Once your report is complete, we schedule a feedback session. During this appointment, your psychologist will explain the results in clear, supportive language, answer your questions and discuss recommended next steps.
This ensures you leave with clarity, understanding and a tangible plan for moving forward.

ASD Assessment Brisbane FAQs

Yes. We offer autism assessments for children aged 5 and above, as well as adolescents and adults of all ages. Each assessment is carefully tailored to the individual’s age and needs.

After your assessment, you will receive:

  • a comprehensive written report outlining your assessment results, strengths and support needs
  • a dedicated feedback session where your psychologist explains the findings in clear, accessible language and answers any questions

If Autism Spectrum Disorder is diagnosed, support may include:

  • strategies for social communication, sensory regulation and daily living skills
  • therapy focused on emotional wellbeing, anxiety, stress or executive functioning
  • recommendations for workplace or academic accommodations
  • guidance for accessing NDIS supports (if eligible)
  • suggestions for community, peer or neurodiversity-affirming services

If a formal diagnosis is not made, the assessment still provides valuable insight into your individual profile, including patterns, strengths and areas where support may be beneficial.

Your psychologist will provide tailored recommendations based on your assessment outcomes and can assist with documentation required for school, university, workplace supports or NDIS applications.

Many clients use their assessment report as part of an NDIS Access Request. Our reports can be customised to align with NDIS guidelines, and typically include:

  • results from psychometric assessments
  • a diagnostic statement per DSM-5-TR (if criteria are met)
  • a detailed functional capacity assessment
  • recommendations relevant to NDIS goals and support needs

While we can assist by providing appropriate documentation, we cannot guarantee NDIS approval. Eligibility depends on several factors, including:

  • whether the diagnosis is recognised under the NDIS (e.g., ADHD alone is not covered)
  • the degree of functional impairment demonstrated across daily life
  • additional reports required from other clinicians (e.g., speech pathology, occupational therapy)

You are welcome to submit your psychological report as part of your NDIS Access Request. If supplementary letters or forms are needed, we can assist — these may incur an additional cost.

Please note: We do not complete Access Request Forms on behalf of clients, but your psychologist’s report can be used to support your application.

Yes. Autism commonly occurs alongside other neurodivergent and mental health conditions. Research shows that around half of autistic individuals also meet criteria for ADHD, and it is also common to see co-occurring differences such as anxiety, depression, learning difficulties or physical traits like hypermobility.

During your assessment, your psychologist will discuss whether exploring additional areas — such as ADHD, learning differences or other neurodevelopmental conditions — may be helpful. If co-assessment is recommended, we will clearly outline what this involves, including any additional costs, so you can make an informed decision before proceeding.

We also conduct ADHD Assessments and Learning Assessments.

Medicare rebates may be available for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) assessments conducted by a Clinical Psychologist under the Complex Neurodevelopmental Disorder (CND) pathway for clients under the age of 25. Eligibility requires a referral from a paediatrician or psychiatrist, and we recommend discussing this with your GP or specialist to determine your suitability.
