Brisbane Centre for Psychology offers depression treatment in a safe and welcoming environment. Depression affects more than 1 in 5 Australians and is widely considered the fourth most prevalent illness in the country. It is a common mental health condition among people of all ages with a range of effective treatment options available. Our compassionate therapists offer depression counselling and cognitive behavioural therapy for depression to get you on the path to improving your mental health.

Are you depressed?

The symptoms of depression aren’t always apparent and tend to affect different people in different ways.

Depression can arise from an array of life experiences, genetics and biochemical factors in the brain. Changes in neurotransmitter levels, such as serotonin and dopamine, can play a significant role in low mood and mood regulation.

However, most people who suffer from depression experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Irritability and anger
  • Feeling empty or sad
  • Thoughts of suicide or death
  • Helplessness or hopelessness
  • Feelings of worthlessness, guilt or regret
  • Restlessness, unable to concentrate or think clearly
  • Physical symptoms (headaches, migraines, stomach aches, chronic pain, etc.)
  • Insomnia, changes in sleeping pattern, trouble falling asleep or staying asleep.

If you have experienced any of these depression symptoms, you could benefit significantly from professional treatment. Whether you need temporary assistance or are affected by a more complex mental illness such as borderline personality disorder, find a supportive depression therapist at Brisbane Centre for Psychology. We have the expertise and experience to help you better manage your mental health.

Depression treatment tailored to your needs

Get the support you need with depression counselling Brisbane.

When you undertake depression treatment, your therapist will use a variety of techniques to help you understand your depression. They will then work with you to help you resolve them and develop coping mechanisms. The techniques they use will depend on the symptoms and severity. Your psychologist will draw on their experience, knowledge and training to determine the most suitable techniques for your depression treatment plan.

Treating depression isn’t always easy and may feel incredibly hard at times. Your depression psychologist will be with you as you come to understand the psychological factors behind the feelings you’re experiencing. They will support you and do their utmost to give you hope, strategies and understanding.

But there’s more to overcoming depression than regular counselling sessions with a depression therapist at our Brisbane Centre for Psychology clinic. We will encourage you to analyse your own thought patterns, behaviour and relationships. Our aim is to increase your awareness of what factors relate to your depression and how to come to terms with it.

Depression treatment with a psychologist at our Stafford clinic, whether behavioural therapy for depression or counselling, can increase your self-esteem and hope for the future. But you’ll need to fully engage with the treatment if you’re to see the best results.

Types of depression and how they affect you

Depression is not a one-size-fits-all condition. It can affect everyone differently, with varying symptoms, intensities, and underlying causes. Understanding the different types of depression can help you make sense of what you’re experiencing and find the right support. No matter what form of depression you’re facing, support is available at Brisbane Centre for Psychology.

Major depressive disorder (MDD), often referred to simply as depression, is characterised by persistent feelings of sadness, emptiness or loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. People with major depression may experience changes in appetite, sleep disturbances, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and, in some cases, thoughts of self-harm or suicide. While depression can feel overwhelming, professional therapy and support can provide relief and a pathway to recovery. It’s important to notice the early warning signs in yourself, seek help immediately and especially if the low has been ongoing for more than two weeks.

Some people experience a lower-level, long-term form of depression known as persistent depressive disorder, or dysthymia. This condition is defined by depressive symptoms that last for at least two years, often making individuals feel as though sadness or low mood is simply a part of their personality. Although symptoms may not be as severe as MDD, they can significantly impact daily life, relationships, and self-esteem.

Bipolar disorder includes extreme mood swings that alternate between depressive and manic episodes. The depressive episodes in bipolar disorder can feel similar to MDD, with deep sadness, exhaustion, and feelings of hopelessness. However, they differ in that they are followed by manic or hypomanic episodes, which may include high energy, impulsivity, or racing thoughts. If you suspect you may have bipolar disorder, a trained psychologist can help assess and guide you toward the right psychological therapy.

Some people experience seasonal depression, also known as seasonal affective disorder (SAD), where mood shifts occur during certain times of the year — most commonly in winter when there is less sunlight, outdoor activity and weather-induced solitude. Symptoms include low energy, difficulty concentrating, changes in appetite, and an overall sense of heaviness. Light therapy, counselling, and lifestyle changes can help manage SAD effectively.

Life is full of unexpected changes, and sometimes, these events can trigger a period of situational depression. This type of depression occurs in response to a specific event, such as the loss of a loved one, a job loss, news of a serious medical illness, or a major life transition. While it is a normal response to hardship, therapy can help you process your emotions in a healthy way and prevent longer-term distress.

Many people who experience depression also struggle with anxiety. Feelings of sadness and hopelessness may be accompanied by excessive worry, restlessness or panic attacks. The combination of depression and anxiety can feel especially overwhelming, but treatment approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), EMDR, schema therapy or mindfulness techniques can help you regain control.
